One of the most important principles of Smart Growth is to put our homes and businesses near rail transit stations. This makes it easier for everyone to get where they need to go when using public transportation and reducing the need for driving in personal cars and increasing traffic congestion. The Shops at Chestnut, part of the Crossing at Lafayette apartment complex and Liberty Belle open air shopping plaza, are less than a half mile from the Spring Hill Metro station on Metro's Gold Line light rail that stops in Downtown Washington, DC.

In May 2006, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) unanimously passed a resolution titled, "Increasing Access to Affordable Housing Developments in America's Cities." Supporting the resolution was a 21-page report that argues that smart growth--the comprehensive effort to reduce sprawl--operates in accordance with the nation's housing policies and values; furthermore, it can be used as a tool to improve urban vitality and return residents to inner cities.
